10 ways to reduce Snowflake costs

  1. Set AUTO_SUSPEND to 60 seconds on most warehouses. Check:
    SHOW WAREHOUSES; -- look at the auto_suspend column
  2. Right-size warehouses. If queries never spill on an L, try an M.
  3. Find credit-heavy warehouses:
    SELECT warehouse_name, SUM(credits_used) credits
    FROM snowflake.account_usage.warehouse_metering_history
    WHERE start_time > DATEADD(day,-30,CURRENT_TIMESTAMP())
    GROUP BY 1 ORDER BY 2 DESC;
  4. Add resource monitors with notify and suspend thresholds.
  5. Cut Time Travel retention on staging and transient tables.
  6. Use TRANSIENT tables for rebuildable data, which skips Fail-safe storage.
  7. Drop unused tables: use ACCESS_HISTORY to find tables no one reads.
  8. Stop always-on BI refreshes that keep warehouses awake.
  9. Review cloud services credits over the 10% adjustment.
  10. Watch serverless features (auto-clustering, materialized views, Snowpipe) in METERING_HISTORY.
